Recharge your batteries – we’re now spending more time consuming media than sleeping
Friday August 8, 2014
Ofcom has revealed that we (UK adults) now spend more time indulged in media and communications activities (8 hours 41 minutes) than we do sleeping (8 hours 21 minutes).
Here’s a few more quick facts for you...
61% of adults own a smartphone. 93% use a mobile phone. And nearly half of the UK’s households have a tablet (44%). The most tech savvy of us are aged 14-15 and we’re unquestionably now frequent multi-taskers, with 53% who multi-task using devices whilst watching TV.
The good news for us is that people are ready and wanting to consume our content. They accept and even want to receive marketing communications, on the lookout for a decent offer. But now more than ever the message has to be targeted, providing relevance to the recipient. Manage to execute this and you’re on to a winner, with good two way communication with your customers. Get it wrong and deliver irrelevant, untimely messages and you’ll be out with the bath water.
I was watching someone make a presentation recently and they talked around giving more choice to customers. It makes absolute sense. If someone actively makes a choice, they’re more likely to be engaged straight away. And therefore more likely to take note of the next message that comes along.
More significantly, by letting the customer choose you’re actually presenting an action that is going to give you something back. In making the choice they are giving information back to you. More insight into who they are, how they behave and what pushes their buttons.
